Women's Health Physiotherapy

At 6S Physio, every woman’s health is important to us

Women’s health physio treatment available at Umina.

Do you sometimes leak urine when you’re exercising?

Is sex uncomfortable or even painful ‘down there’?

Has your body changed after having a baby and you don’t know where to seek help?

From puberty to the years after menopause and beyond, women’s bodies go through some pretty amazing changes. Women’s Health Physiotherapists have special training to allow us to properly assess and treat conditions that impact many women throughout life.

Women’s Health Physiotherapy helps with common issues such as:

  • Pregnancy-related aches and pains
  • Exercise advice during and after pregnancy
  • Post-Pregnancy Recovery for your pelvic floor, core muscles, and safe return to exercise
  • Urine leakage with exercise, coughing, or sneezing
  • Always needing the loo and not always making it in time
  • Bowel problems like urgency or constipation
  • Discomfort or pain with vaginal intercourse
  • Physical challenges associated with Menopause
  • Underlying conditions (like endometriosis or irritable bowel syndrome) where pelvic floor function plays an important role

Your physiotherapist will listen with care to the history of your problem. She will provide evidence-based options for a plan of management that suits you and your goals

What we do?

Every woman who receives care at 6S Physio can expect individualised education and advice about her condition and self-care strategies. We consider the whole body, the whole person – not just the area where your symptoms are.

Treatment sessions with a women’s health physiotherapist may also include:

  • Real-time ultrasound training of deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles
  • Internal assessment of pelvic floor muscle function
  • Soft tissue release techniques to allow muscles to relax and contract properly
  • Exercises to help you overcome unhelpful patterns of movement or improve a specific skill like running downhill or lifting the pram
  • Use of training devices and equipment to assist with strengthening or otherwise improving the function of pelvic floor and core muscles

Conditions we treat?

Pregnancy can be really uncomfortable! There can be aches and pains, pelvic floor issues like leaking when you exercise, and the pure physical stress of growing your baby. We can help with trusted advice and safe, gentle therapies to support you through the whole journey.

Your women’s health physiotherapist is trained to offer advice on healthy timeframes for recovery, treatments for pelvic floor rehabilitation, abdominal separation, and other challenges such as sore wrists, recurrent mastitis or blocked ducts while breastfeeding.

Pelvic pain could be: Pain with sex, or at any time over the inner or outer genital region, or pain affecting the joints of the pelvis, hips and lower back. Your pelvic health physiotherapist can help figure out the underlying causes and work with you on resolving the problem.

Incontinence means being unable to stop leakage of urine, stools or wind. It is very common for women to experience incontinence – and not just after having baby or later in life. Young women female athletes, women with chronic coughing, and women who have had serious illness impacting the pelvic region are all at higher risk. Fortunately, effective physiotherapy interventions are available, such as simple lifestyle modifications, supervised pelvic floor muscle training, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

Women with a prolapse of their bladder, uterus or bowel often feel like something is coming down inside the vagina, a pressure or heaviness, dragging lower back pain, or difficulty with sex or with bladder or bowel function. Women’s Health Physiotherapists can offer proven treatments to minimise or eliminate pelvic organ prolapse symptoms.
